I lived and worked in South East Asia for nine years. In that time, I saw things that were sacred and profane. Sometimes in the same scene, and with the same breath. It's a fascinating place. My boss at the time gave me the best advice on the culture that I could imagine. He said, "There is no why to what they do. There are 200 million of them, and one of you. Just go with it." I think you will see that here and plenty of it!

In these two short stories, we experience two cultures, in a way many of us will never know in such personal detail. The narratives of each character expand through concise, evocative, descriptions of the sights, smells, sound, and feel of each locale, creating a palpable sense of place juxtaposed with an intense sense of desire, motivation, and dreams of a greater life.I love these stories, particularly "Postage Paid", wherein I'm drawn up not only in the main character's longing, but also in the full trio rounding out the story. The interplay across time, distance, economies, culture, integrity, justification, and need, is fascinating. And each individual is so well articulated I could see and hear each moment, understand and empathize with each thought, even as they glanced against my own societal norms.
These stories do what great fiction is capable of - through small, intimate stories and details, illustrate an entire world, and bring insights, learning, and understanding. A tall order for a short story, which each of these exceeds.

A friend gave me a copy adn it contain some very useful information. For example, the section that proves their violations was simply left out of the regulation books by teh IRS bureaucracy.

It opens the readers eyes to both the horror of our situation as american citizens, and the hope that we may yet make america what it was meant to be. The truth is, many american citizens dont seem to actually want freedom. they say they do, but they have no idea what freedom is, because they have never been truly free. This book shows what is wrong with our government. People may disagree about they way things have turned out for america, but the fact remains, incontravertably, that the american federal government has long since over stepped its bounds formed for it by the constitution. Liberty is an illusion.
