No other sport, and indeed few other activities evoke as much passion as does baseball. It is a passion that unites generations and genders, laborers and lawyers, Republicans and Democrats. Baseball serves as a common language, a unified way of perceiving the world, a means to greater understanding. Baseball’s shrines, rituals, myths, and heroes certainly give it a religious aura, but many activities may be pursued “religiously.” Baseball is beyond religion. It is a living myth that puts us in touch with Eternity, with the Infinite. Its Miracle is not some long-ago act that contradicts the laws of physics. Its Miracle is the scrubbing away of cynicism to reveal the fresh-faced child within who is ready to believe, eager to believe, who does believe. Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts Baseball as a Spiritual Experience is an examination in memoir form of how baseball nourishes the spiritual side of those who are part of the game.

Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts Baseball as a Spiritual Experience eBook Austin Gisriel Reviews

Those with a love of America's past-time (and I mean the true, abiding kind of love that transcends words, spanning generations and lifetimes) will not want to miss this book. Though easily readable in a sitting or two, the length of the volume belies the depth of insight in its pages.
The author closes his work with a quote from Rogers Hornsby
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
Spring is almost here. But if, like me (and Mr. Hornsby), the wait has you weary, get your hands on a copy of Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts. You won't be sorry you did.
This book perfectly encapsulates why baseball is so important to so many. Without giving any of the message away, this book dives into the spiritual nature of the game and the special pull the game has that is unlike anything else in this world. Several tears were shed while reading this book!
A must read for anyone who ever played and dreamed of making it to the big show but just didn't have the talent. It's a great read about dads, sons (and daughters) and the rhythm of life.
A great read. As a mother of two former little leaguers, I spent many afternoons on the edge of the bleacher seats cheering my boys on. "Fathers, Sons, &Holy Ghosts" brought back many fond memories. The author's passion for the game and it's traditions captures the interest of the reader.
Maybe it's because I read this two days after game 7 of the World Series and I'm facing 103 days of no baseball until Spring Training begins, but I really loved reading this book. I hope to convince my friends who do not understand the mystery that is baseball to read it as well. It probably won't make them baseball people, but it might make them understand my winter doldrums.
This is a quick, must read for anyone who has a soft spot in their heart for the game of baseball, or for anyone who wants to understand why people have such a deep love for the sport. This book would make an ideal stocking stuffer or Father’s Day Gift, or even a Mother’s Day gift if your mother is as big a fan of the game as mine was. I loved reading Austin Gisriel’s memories of the game, the people he spent time with, as well as the stories of other people’s memories surrounding baseball and what it meant to them. A sweet read. I highly recommend it.
Well written, but even more so, it resonated with my experiences over the years of loving baseball. If you love baseball you'll love this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, fun, and sometimes very moving book -- even though I know relatively little about baseball, except that I played softball growing up. But I was drawn to it because I have little baseball players in my family. For those who are real baseball fans, I am sure that the vivid re-telling of the stories of some of the world's most famous moments in baseball history will be utterly thrilling! But what I loved the most about this book was the author's proposal that baseball is a spiritual act. "Its Miracle is the scrubbing away of cynicism to reveal the fresh-faced child within who is ready to believe..." The author's refreshing, entertaining discussion--and profound understanding--of what makes life beautiful and how baseball contributes to that beauty is an idea that now fully resonates for me...it just feels so true!. This has got to be very different from most of the other books about the sport. I was completely charmed in so many unexpected ways. I highly recommend it!
